Artistic Styles Used In Computer Games (task 2)

PHOTOREALISM
Photorealism is an art style that tries to make an object or person seem as real as possible almost as if you were looking at a photograph of said object/person and because the characters in the game seem so realistic it can create a link betwean them and the audience and can effect the player on a personal level like in a film were a character dies the audience feels sad and in multiple ocasions have been brought to tears. This art style is featured in in many games such as Last Of Us , Max Payne 3 and Call Of Duty Black Ops 2.

Most game development company’s do this to show off what there game engines can do and attract more companies to use their engines and gain more users

CELL SHADING
Cell shading is used to define characters using brighter and bolder colours and often using thicker lines for shading to make things like muscles and bevelling on a car stand out even more the definition on characters muscles is often used to empower or even intimidate the player making them feel invincible/vulnerable depending on weather or not the player is playing as that character.
Cell shading is used by games like borderlands, street fighter and team fortress 2.

ABSTRACTION

To abstract something is to simplify it, reducing it to a few essentials
abstraction in gaming is a game that relies on basic shapes rather than super defined characters.
Games that use this concept are Tetris, Pac man and hotline Miami
although abstraction in games seems like a lazy aproach some of the most amazing and adictive hand held games are made used abstraction like angry birds ,fall down and tiny tower.

EXAGGERATION
Exaggeration is used in games to make to make everything look and feel better than it would in a realistic game also it gives characters body’s you wouldn’t be able to obtain in real life.
Also all characters senses can be enhanced more than a real person can ever imagine having , giving characters amazing reflexes and an intense pain threshold .
For instance characters from gears of war has insanely defined muscles giving them the strength of a tank, they could walk through gun fire and get riddled with bullets and walk it of in under a minute.

My Steampunk Illustrations

My steampunk illustrations from rebelben77

Image 1
main character
as ilustrated in the picture i wanted my character to have goggles on to give him a steampunk look i also gave him a military style jacket and a top hat but it had been cut out of the picture.this was only a rough sketch and i feel that it was rushed slightly.

Image 2
Side kick character(dogma)
As the main character is not increadibly wealthy i felt that Dogma should be a rust bucket style character put together using various cheap looking parts.
the side kick style characters
were C-3POin starwars episode I, The Wonder Bot from Robots and WALL-E.
personaly i realy like my original design shown in this image so i used this as my final character design.

Image 3
Additional steampunk artwork
this picture is a steampunk variation of a cartoon character called Finn from the show Adventure Time.
with this i was just experimenting with the steampunk design in my free time but i thought would fit nicely in this assignment
